hi,

i came across a website (www.kalei.com) with a cool design to make a
katana (japanese sword). the pages showing how to make the katana are
below:

i got to around step 8 (on page 2) and then i got kinda stuck... the
previous step (7) shows two rough edges designated by double
arrowheads at different parts of the folding, but in step 8 one of
them disappears and i'm not actually sure where it disappears to....it
then reappears in step 9 while the other rough edge disappears...again
i'm not sure where that one went too...

as you can probably tell i'm rather new at this origami stuff but i
really want to get this model down pat. if anyone can help me with my
problems that would be greatly appreciated.

also if there are any books or websites that you could suggest to help
me get better at the artform and its terminology, that would help
immensely as well.

(PS i like realistic looking origami designs like flowers so if you
could direct me to some good sites specializing in those specifically
i would appreciate it)

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!

Interesting diagrams. Unfortunately they don't follow the international
origami symbols, which makes it a bit harder to figure them out.

As for the model you're working on: I think you can just valley-fold
along the two dotted lines. Or, if the zig-zag line at the top right of
diagram 9 is any indication, valley-fold the first dotted line, and
mountain-fold the second dotted line - just try both and see what works
best for the model. The important thing is that you end up with the
right folds as shown in diagram 11. This is generally a good method:
Look a few diagrams ahead to see what the result of this particular fold
is supposed to be, this way you can get a better idea of how the fold
should be done.

My almost ancient welcome message with useful links is here:

The international folding symbols are explained here:
<http://www.oriland.com/learning/symbols/a_symbols.asp>. This is a cute
site with a couple nice diagrams.

Don't give up! Working with diagrams is quite difficult, it's best to
have someone with you who can explain things. Perhaps there's an origami
society in your vicinity, check out the list on Joseph Wu's site:

May the Fold be with you!
